Man Accused Of Vandalizing Golf Course

— Springdale police said a man upset about a golf ball damaging his car used weed killer to cause thousands of dollars worth of damage to the Springdale Country Club.

Bill D. Lane, 60, of 1901 Shady Grove Road D15 in Springdale was charged Wednesday with one count of first-degree criminal mischief. The Class D felony is punishable by up to six years in prison.

Springdale police began investigating Lane on May 1 after the groundskeeper at Springdale Country Club reported an herbicide killed the grass on the green near Hole No. 12. He estimated the damage at $3,500.

The groundskeeper told a detective he believed the vandalism was tied to an April 21 incident in which an older man from the nearby trailer park came to the country club demanding reimbursement for an errant golf ball shattering the windshield on his Chrysler PT Cruiser.

The man was denied compensation and left angry, threatening to damage the golf course, according to an arrest warrant affidavit filed Wednesday.

The groundskeeper found a maroon PT Cruiser with a damaged windshield at Lane’s home in a trailer park. He also found a pump sprayer for Roundup weed killer, according to the affidavit.

Police were unable to contact Lane.

Lane was not listed at the Washington County Detention Center as of Wednesday afternoon. His bond has been set at $2,500.
