— 100 YEARS AGO June 27, 1912

About $5,000 worth of gambling devices, recently seized by Sheriff Norman A. Beller and his deputies in Argenta, were burned yesterday on the lawn north of the county courthouse. The paraphernalia consisted of roulette, Klondike, poker, “crap” and other tables and a quantity of cards, dice and chips, employed in the operating of gambling games. The stuff was saturated with coal oil and the match was applied by Sheriff Beller, and in a short while the pile of mahogany tables was reduced to ashes.

50 YEARS AGO June 27, 1962

The Arkansas Highway Commission said today it is looking forward to spending some $79 million on roads during the coming year and thinks that a fiveman board can do it better than a larger one. In the question and answer period with newsmen today, the commissioners were unanimous in their belief that a larger commission is too “unwieldy” to do a good job and professed that all sections of the state are considered constantly in road programming.

Arkansas officials reacted with shock Friday to the news that the Grand Gulf nuclear plant case is going back to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. They also said that while the implications for Arkansas ratepayers are uncertain, they do not appear to be favorable. “It’s one more bizarre incident in a very bizarre case,” said Sarah M. Bradshaw, a spokesman for the state Public Service Commission.

The threat of sticky beverages ruining expensive airport screening equipment or dripping on others in line means travelers now face another ban. This week, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration began enforcing a ban on airline passengers carrying open beverage containers through security checkpoints. Resealable containers such as water and softdrink bottles are allowed if their caps are on. So, not only will travelers have to empty their pockets, possibly remove their shoes and spread their arms to pass through a security checkpoint, they’ll have to gulp down their coffee, too.
