New website will allow Arkansans to track spending

— Arkansans soon will be able to track state spending through a new government website.

The website — Transparency.Arkansas.gov — will be available Sunday. At first, it’ll allow Arkansans to look up salaries of a number of state employees. Later on, officials say users will be able to track expenditures and revenue online.

The website comes after a 2011 law required the state to set up an “online checkbook” so the public could see how much most agencies spend.

It’ll cover expenditures from all state agencies, except for state institutions of higher education.

The measure was advocated by Republican Lt. Gov. Mark Darr, who was elected partly on the promise to set up the site.
