Goodall to speak at UA on Oct. 5

— The University of Arkansas announced Tuesday that British anthropologist Jane Goodall will speak on the Fayetteville campus this fall.

Goodall’s talk is scheduled for 7 p.m. Oct. 5 at Barnhill Arena, according to a news release. It is free and open to the public. A book signing will follow the lecture.

In 1958, Goodall traveled Africa to pursue a lifelong dream of living with and writing about wild animals. After working with legendary anthropologist Louis Leakey, she was offered the rare opportunity to study wild chimpanzees on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika at the Gombe Stream Reserve.

In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute, which today is a global organization withmore than 27 offices that support research at Gombe, as well as community-centered conservation programs in Africa, and youth leadership and education around the world.

Goodall’s appearance is one of the events planned to mark the 10th anniversary of UA’s Honors College. It is co-sponsored by the college and the campus’ Distinguished Lectures Committee.

UA created the Honors College in the spring 2002, shortly after announcing a $300 million gift from the family of Sam Walton, the late Wal-Mart Stores Inc. founder. The gift earmarked $200 million for the creation of the college, including an endowment for Honors College Fellowships.

The lectures committee determines who speaks at UA each fall and spring semester. Since the series began in 2002, past lecturers have included politicians, authors and actors.
