The University of Arkansas initiated a bicycle registration policy three years ago to determine how many parking spaces are needed for bikes on campus.

— University of Arkansas officials said no additional bike parking has been added on campus as a result of a registration policy adopted four years ago to measure the need.

Although 50 bicycle spots have been added since 2009, Gary Smith, university director of the parking and transit department, said data collected through registrations wasn't a factor in those additions.

The policy requires students to register bikes if they want to park on campus. When a parking and transit committee of students and staff initiated the policy in 2009, it was a response to complaints about illegally parked bikes, Smith said.

At the time, officials also said it would provide data on the number of bikes on campus to help determine parking spaces needed.

The initial goal was to add 100 spaces a year, officials said in 2009.

"We obviously haven't done that yet," Smith said. "I expect there will be some more with all the construction in the center of campus."

According to the parking and transit department, no students were cited for bicycle parking violations in 2010.
