PUBLIC VIEWPOINT What Presidential Candidates Have In Common

There’s an old saying about the pointing of one’s finger at another to accuse them. It goes, “As you point the one fi nger at another, there are three pointing back at you.”

As I look at what President Barack Obama says about Mitt Romney, I keep thinking about this old saying.

There is the accusation that Romney’s greatgrandfather or his grandfather was part of a sect that had many wives. I’ve heard President Obama’s father married his second wife without divorcing his fi rst wife.

Then there is the story about Romney puttinghis dog in a kennel and strapping the kennel to the top of the car for a 12-hour trip.

Obama’s dog, Bo, has a website asking for all dog lovers to vote for his owner in November. Now, a child doesn’t necessarily have control over what he is served to eat; thus, having eaten dog meat at an early age. But Obama has signed a bill allowing the killing and consumption of horse meat. Eating horse meat is not what Americans do!

Americans love their horses.

Then, Romney has been attacked for being wealthy.

The Obamas aren’t exactly poor. Just about every member of Congress is a millionaire.

No one seems to be bothered with the wealth the Kennedys had or the wealth Sen. John Kerry married into, or what former President Clinton charges for his expertise.

Suddenly, with the Obama administration, wealth isn’t fashionable. I’m trying to recall who said, “I never got a job from a poor man.” Oh yeah, Sean Hannity of Fox News.

Bella VistaINTEREST RATE JUMPINGOn July 1 the interest rate on subsidized Stafford student loanswill automatically double, jumping to 6.8 percent from 3.4 percent overnight. Young people are facing the worst job market in generations;

they cannot suddenly afford to pay even more on their educational loans. At a time when banks can borrow money at near-zero interest, it is unconscionable for rates to double for student loans!

Bella VistaTAX IS TOO MUCH

Ihave seen many articles

showing the amount of tax increase for a $200,000 home but very little about $100,000 or just under orover that value, which many of us have in Bella Vista.

I called the Benton County clerk’s oft ce and was told my increase for home and personal property would be around $140 annually. On a fi xed income this kind of increase is unacceptable. The planners for Bentonville schools need to look at other options and present a much lower millage increase to the citizens of their district.

Bella VistaTHANKS FOR RESPONSES

Ican’t believe it’s been

nine years since I wroteto ask for information about Feemster’s in Siloam Springs. I had recently bought a 1964 Chevy pickup with both Feemster’s and Siloam Springs embossed on the rear bumper. Anyway, you published my letter and I received several touching and interesting responses from your readers. Thank you all so much.

My favorite email was from a fellow whose brother drove a Chevy truck from Siloam Springs to Travis Air Force Base back in the ’60s.

I still drive the truck here in Northern California with the Feemster’s-Siloam Springs bumper proudly on it.
