LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said Wednesday that he is planning a run for governor in 2014.
In a statement, McDaniel said he began "laying the groundwork for campaign for Governor" on Wednesday with the filing of Articles of Incorporation, a legal step that allows organizing and financing a bid.
A formal announcement of a run for governor will come later, McDaniel said, adding he expects a "hard-fought campaign."
"I have the experience and ability to lead our state, confront the issues facing our citizens, and meet the demands of a 21st century economy," McDaniel said in the statement. "I believe Arkansas's best days are yet to come, and I look forward to sharing my vision in the months ahead."
McDaniel, a Democrat, is the first candidate to announce his intention to run. Gov. Mike Beebe is term-limited after being reelected in 2010.
McDaniel has been attorney general since 2007.
