Barack Obama has never defined the rich as a soulless, faceless person. He is only asking the rich (like himself) to pay more than they have as of late. Mitt Romney paid a lower percentage in income taxes on his 8 figure income than I paid on my hard earned 5 figure salary. This is simply not fair. Mr. Akin should not take President Obama's request to get the rich (anyone making over $400,000) to pay 3 percentage points more as some kind of redistribution of wealth. As billionaire Warren Buffet put it, "Yes we have class warfare in this country and guess what? We are winning." President Obama (as well as 72% of Americans) feels it is time for us middle class folks to win too. Good for him because finally we have a President who gets it!

There are no millionaires living next door to me or on my block. They are in a different part of town, probably in a gated community.
Nor are all very rich people working long hours in start up companies.
Some inherited their money.
Some gained it by manipulating money rather than producing goods and services.
As hawgfan points out, there is no question of revenge against rich people, onlyl asking them to pay income taxes at a rate similar to what they paid a couple of decades ago.

What rate should that be, hawg and Coralie? 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, or 100% Lets, for the sake of fairness, make it retroactive and require the gated manipulating evil rich to pay 125% of their stolen income to the good and glorious Obama so he can rename himself "Robin Hood." and give it to the poor who, as we all know, built this country. "You don't own that."......Joseph Stalin 1934

39% like it was when Clinton was in office and we had a budget surplus of $200 billion dollars. Don't you ever quote Joseph Stalin in response to me. I am a free enterprise entreprenuer and I have in my S corporation created jobs. I pay my people a wage that allows them to live a decent economic life. So cut the tired right wing hate talk immediately if not sooner.

"Mankind is divided in rich and poor, into property owners and exploited; and to abstract oneself from the fundamenal division; and from the antagonism between poor and rich means abstracting oneself from fundamental facts."....Joseph Stalin.

Hurts doesn't it.

Moneymyst, You are the problem with politics in this country. Because someone disagrees with you, you brand them by equating them with Joseph Stalin using scare quotes. Not everybody who wants to see the wealthy pay more in income taxes for the sake of fairness is a "socialist communist". You are a living example of why our democracy is under siege. We cannot have a civil discussion without someone entering the rhetorical gutter of comparing those they disagree to a genocidal psychopath. Shame on you!

I really thought Stalin made a really good point as to the wealthy and exploited. I agree with you and Obama that the wealthy should do more for the support of exploited. You, wrongly, think it should be done through the corrupt income tax system. I think that income tax does not touch those who have, for instance, won the lottery or inherited family wealth. A man can be a billionare and have no income, and file for earned income credit. But said millionare will spend his millions. Fairness is a tax, big tax, on luxury purchases that the exploited cannot pruchase. No tax on food, big tax on automobiles priced over 35,000 dollars and up she goes as the price rises.

See we agree, we just disagree on how to do it. Also being a genocidal pshchopath does not mean one cannot make intelligent statements. The fundamental fact is that in any society there will be haves and have nots and that is a fundamental fact. I did not compare you to Stalin, I just stated his position and you compared yourself

Your framing of the situation is still snarky, Moneymyst.
Taxing the wealthy a few more percentage points goes to support government expenses of all types--including building and repairing infrastructure, and military debt--not just for "support of the exploited."
I believe that those who win the lottery or sweepstakes do pay a large tax on it.
As for income from investments, a tax reform would make this kind of income subject to the same rate as earned income, instead of much less as is the current case.

"in any society there will be haves and have nots and that is a fundamental fact."
However the gap between the wealthiest and poorest is now larger in the U.S. than in other industrialized countries.
"Inequality in the United States is so severe that low-earning U.S. workers are actually worse off than low-earning workers in all but seven peer countries. As shown in the figure, the United States ranks 12th out of the 19 peer countries shown."
http://www.epi.org/publication/ib339-...
In the U.S. 2 or 3 X as many live below the poverty line as in countries such as Austria, France, Norway, and Switzerland.
Please do not rip off my comments by following with some puerile "joke."

It's not about intelligence.
Constantly changing the subject with a joke rips off the energy of any real discussion.

You're right, I've forgotten now what the discussion was or is or is not. If its about more taxes the answer is NO, it its about more revealing swimsuits in Sports Illustrated, the answer is YES.

I can understand the contempt for the "rich". When I was younger it would get under my skin that someone could have more than another- you know nicer homes, cars, vacations, etc. But as I matured I was able to let it go. At about 18 I realized that hating and coveting was getting me nowhere and that it would be better for me to emulate the successful rather than deride them.

So many issues here:

1) Does taking from those you do not know make "taking" more acceptable?

2)How do we define "wealthy"? $250k? $400K? Those who inherit? Those who work their tails off and sacrifice to create a service or product, then have something to show for it?

3)Do we want to positively reinforce government dependency and negatively reinforce entrepraneurship?

4) Is redistributing wealth the proper role of government?

Posted by: freedomlover

December 25, 2012 at 3:55 p.m. ( | suggest removal )

Answer to # 4. No, government's role is not redistributing wealth, that is the job of Democrats.

Answer to # 2. Wealthy is anyone who has more than me.

Answer to # 1. Stealing through the government makes it OK because then you can call it welfare.

Answer to # 3. Yes. Who elected Oboma. Yes we can.

Did you all know our Senator J. Boozeman did finally take his hands out of his pocket to endorse the bill for the elimination of the death tax. this only applies to those leaving over 3 million dollars.
this is the most important loop hole to the wealthy. John has worked on this instead of anything to help the people of Arkansas. the last decade of unfair advantages for the wealthy have made alot of rich folks who will do anything to hang onto all the wealth in this nation. they will bribe senators like Boozeman to introduce bills so that their heirs will never have to work, trust fund babies who will never have to pay taxes. this is against the idea that people work for thier money. they just want to make sure they stay wealthy by passing UNfair tax advantage laws.
What has the senator done for the middle class?

Posted by: ladyLiberty

December 26, 2012 at 8:52 a.m. ( | suggest removal )

The Senator has done nothing for the middle class, or the low class, or the anykind of class. The only good Boozeman does is sit in a seat that could have a Democrat in it like Blanche who did and would have done all of us real harm.

OK, the real path not taken was to run someone other than a Mormon for President and have had a real chance to get rid of Osama.

Which path is that ladyliberty? Defunding defense and increasingly taxing the hell out of everyone that happens to pay for everything in the first place. A flat tax would solve this issue, but some on the left are scared their base would actually have to pay some (their "fair share") taxes and thus support from said base would be lost.
