Lady Tigers Dominate Lady Lions

Prairie Grove scored only four points in the fourth quarter and still won by 21 points.

That’s how badly the Lady Tigers dominated Gravette during a 62-41 victory over the Lady Lions Friday. It was the second consecutive 4A-1 Conference victory for Prairie Grove (7-3, 2-0), which opened league play with a victory over Ozark.

Prairie Grove took control at the outset by jumping to an 11-2 lead. Monica White scored consecutive baskets late in the second quarter for Gravette before the Lady Tigers answered with 12 consecutive points to take a 27-9 lead.

Prairie Grove led 58-30 after three quarters and the fourth quarter was played with a running clock because of the 30-point mercy rule.

“I thought we did an excellent job in the first quarter except for the last couple of minutes,” Prairie Grove coach Kevin Froud said. “We did a good job of blocking out and keeping the pressure on them.”

Gravette’s best quarter came in the third when the Lady Lions managed 16 points. The Lady Lions got to within 38-27 after a 3-pointer by Whitney DeWitt, but Prairie Grove countered with 10 consecutive points to regain a 48-27 lead. Lacey Beeks provided the highlight when she scored a basket with a defender hanging on her arm and added a free throw for a three-point play.

Prairie Grove had five players score between eight and 16 points, starting with Justyn Huber with 16. Junior Macie Kultgen followed with 13 points and junior Abby Smith added 10.

Kultgen made five field goals, including a 3-pointer.

“(Kultgen) tore her ACL last year, so she’s really a year behind,” Froud said. “But she’s got a chance to be a real good one. She’s a real strong girl and she’s learning as she goes.”

Gravette was mostly ineffective in the first half except for a brief spurt when the Lady Tigers got the ball inside to White. She scored consecutive baskets to cut the Prairie Grove lead to 15-9, but that didn’t slow the Lady Tigers.

Prairie Grove answered with 12 consecutive points to take a 27-9 lead. Gravette managed only five points in the second quarter after trailing 17-9 after one quarter.

Samantha Pruitt finished with 15 points to lead the Lady Lions.
