Springdale Boys Win, Girls Suffer Loss

DaShaun Stark scored 17 points and Springdale High jumped out to an 18-point lead in the third quarter as the Bulldogs cruised to Thursday’s 59-45 win over Tulsa (Okla.) East Central at the Bixby (Okla.) Tournament.

Tyler Tutt and Alex Scharlau added nine points each, helping Springdale (3-2) take a 33-22 halftime lead and roll into today’s semifinals of the tournament. The Bulldogs will face Putnam City, Okla., at 5:30 p.m. in a rematch of last year’s semifinal game.

“I thought the second quarter we kind of settled into a comfort zone and started attacking the basket and getting points around the rim,” Springdale boys basketball coach Brad Stamps said. “Defensively we were really good helping each other.”

Tereke Eckwood added seven points for Springdale in the win.

Girls

Brittany Jurgens scored 13 points and Javonda Daniels added 11, but Springdale came up short in a 46-39 loss to Mustang, Okla., at the Durant (Okla.) Lion Classic.

Victoria Smith had 10 points for the Lady Bulldogs (1-4), who trailed 15-13 at halftime and were down only four points heading into the fourth quarter. But Mustang relied on a pair of post players to pull out the win.

“We really competed well. We fought really hard,” Springdale girls basketball coach Heather Hunsucker said. “They had a few more shots fall for them.”

Springdale returns to action in a game at 1:40 p.m. today.
