LR McClellan misses out on opportunities

— A bevy of missed layups and steady diet of Cameron Payne handed Little Rock Mc-Clellan a season-opening loss at the Battle of the Border on Saturday afternoon.

Payne, a 6-1 senior guard who has signed with Murray State, scored 18 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, handed out 6 assists and made 5 steals as the Lausanne Collegiate Lynx claimed a 72-59 victory over the Lions at George Cirks Arena.

McClellan led 29-25 at the half but squandered a chance to take an even bigger advantage by making only 13 of 41 first-half shots. Lausanne (4-0) outscored McClellan 29-10 in the third quarter.

McClellan Coach Chris Threatt said his team missed seven point-blank shots in the first half.

“When you add that 14 points to our four-point lead at halftime, it’s supposed to be an 18-point game,” Threatt said. “So when they make that 10- to 12-point run in the second half, it changes the whole way the game is played.”

Junior Jason Hendrix led McClellan with 13 points and nine rebounds while Terrance Jones added 12 points, 3 assists and 3 steals.
