— Storm Spotter Training Offered

The Siloam Springs Department of Emergency Management will be hosting a Storm Spotters Training Class in coordination with the National Weather Service at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Siloam Springs Community Building, 110 N. Mount Olive St.

Once trained, the storm spotters provide firsthand severe weather reports to their local officials and to the National Weather Service, which are used to make critical weather warning decisions.

Talent Show Seeks Contestants

The 12th annual Children’s Miracle Network Talent Show is set for March 26 at the Clarksville Fine Arts Building in the Clarksville High School.

The competition includes the following divisions: Division 1 for ages 1-12; Division 2 for ages 13-18; and Division 3 for ages 19 and older.

Contestants will be judged in five categories, with a possible score from 1-10: stage presence, audience appeal, natural ability, technical skill and overall performance.

The top six acts in each division will advance to the finals. Finals will be at 6 p.m.

Prizes awarded for each division include $200 for first place, $100 for second place and $50 for third place.

Registration fee is $30 in advance or $35 day of show.

Admission to the event is $6 for adults and $3 for children.

Light refreshments will be available.

Springdale Native National Finalist

Leanne Scaggs, a Springdale native, will travel to Milwaukee Wis., in March to compete as one of seven National Finalists in the Music Teachers National Association Young Artist Vocal Competition.

Scaggs earned this opportunity after winning the West Central Division of the Young Artist Vocal Competition. A second year graduate student and Graduate Teaching Assistant at Wichita State University, Scaggs has been studying classical voice for seven years. She will complete her master’s in music degree in opera performance in May.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in music education from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and her performances include Don Giovanni as Zerlina with the Opera in the Ozarks.

The National MTNA Young Artist Vocal Competition Finals will take place March 28 during the MTNA National Conference. The national winner of this competition receives a cash prize and will perform in a Winners Concert during the conference.

Group Plans ‘Free’ Yard Sale

Lions for Life at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith is collecting new and used clothing - especially for children - as well as toys, blankets and other items babies and children can use.

The donated items will then beoffered to pre-registered needy families at a yard sale slated for 9 to 11 a.m. March 12 at the Bell Tower on the Campus Green.

Pre-registered families will be given a certain number of tickets based on the family size. They can then use the tickets to “buy” items at the sale.

UA Program Hosts Donald

Roger Donald, visiting writer with the University of Arkansas Programs in Creative Writing and Translation, will make a presentation at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Giffels Auditorium, Old Main, on the UA campus.

Roger Donald worked briefly at McGraw Hill, Funk & Wagnalls, World Publishing and then, for 30 years, at Little Brown and Co. where he served at various times as senior editor, editor-in-chief and publisher. He has edited many important authors, including Edward Abbey, John Barth, Thomas Berger, Peter DeVries, Ellen Gilchrist, Thom Jones, Arthur Krock, Dumas Malone, William Manchester,Curtis LeMay, Richard Nixon, William Shirer, David Sedaris and I.F. Stone.

The event is free and open to the public.

Souper Soup Benefits Museum

The Eureka Springs Historical Museum’s annual Souper Soup is set for 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 13 at the Eureka Springs High School cafeteria. All proceeds from this event benefit the museum.

Soups of all flavors, provided by some of the city’s finest restaurants, will be available.

Along with two bowls of soup, attendees will also get cornbread, a beverage and a choice of dessert from a selection prepared by local Bed and Breakfast establishments.

Cost is $6 for adults and $3 for children under 12 years of age.

Samplers are encouraged to vote for their favorites.

Tickets are available at the museum at 95 S. Main St., from any museum board member or at the door the day of the event.

Community Center Hosts Dinner

The Elizabeth Richardson Center will present a dinnerand variety show March 9 at the Springdale Senior Center, located at 1100 Watson Ave. in Springdale. Dinner is at 5:30 p.m., and the show will start at approximately 6:30 p.m.

Cost is $5 per person, and all proceeds benefit ERC’s three unified softball teams.

Foundation To Have Session

The Peel Compton Foundation will host a Grantseeking 101 Workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

March 8 at the Compton Gardens Conference Center, 312 N. Main St. in Bentonville.

The workshop will offer a fast-paced introduction to finding and obtaining grants for nonprofits. Discussion will include how to find funders, how to read their guidelines, tips for putting together strong proposal packages and grants budgets.

Attendees will leave with a sample outline for grant proposals, a grantseeking bibliography, a list of research resources, a grants glossary, sample foundation guidelines and a handout on goal, objectives and outcomes. Cost is $50.

Library Offers ACT Prep Workshop

The Bentonville Public Library will offer a free ACT Prep Workshop from 6 to 7:30 p.m. March 7. The workshop will be presented by Bryan Hembree, director of College Access Initiative at the University of Arkansas, in the Walmart Community Room of the library. Attendees will learn motivating strategies and a fresh approach to conquering the ACT.

Library Holds Spanish Classes

The Fayetteville Public Library will offer a six-week beginning Spanish skills class for students in third through fifth grade. The class will meet from 4 to 5 p.m.

Mondays, March 7 through April 18, in the Walmart Storytime Room. University of Arkansas students from Sigma Delta Pi will be teaching the classes.

The program is free, but registration is required.
