Second thoughts

— Seafood OK, but not bass

Kevin VanDam won his fourth Bassmaster Classic title in New Orleans last Sunday and surpassed $5 million in career earnings. VanDam has been competitively fishing for about 30 years, but according to ESPN, he’s still a little fishy about his food.

“I love sushi. I love tuna,” VanDam said. “And it’s funny. I rarely ever eat bass. For some reason, it’s hard to kill something that I’m making a living off.”

VanDam, 43, said he used a catch-and-release system like the pros do even when he and his friends were younger.

“I loved the competition, so I’d want to keep the fish in the lakes so I can get them again the next time. I didn’t want to deplete the bodies of water,” he said.

“You don’t understand. There are so many ways you can preparefish these days. Trout. Pike. I’m not sure I could eat bluegill every day, though,” VanDam said.

There’s certainly a lot you can do with shrimp.

A pricey diet

When Miami Heat reserve small forward James Jones travels, he racks up a tab eating out.

Jones, a vegetarian, told ESPN that ordering meals to suit his diet isn’t so easy on the road.

“Room service is tough. The side dishes are themost overpriced thing on the menu. I’m ordering five side dishes of steamed broccoli, five dishes of steamed asparagus and a bowl of brown rice. My bill for that right there might be $70,” he said.

Jones, who won the three-point competition at last week’s NBA All-Star weekend, said he was a “very heavy meat-eater” before becoming a vegetarian in 2007.

Jones made the dietary change during the 2007 NBA playoffs when he played for the Phoenix Suns.

Jones said of his dinner bills, “that’s the trade-off if you want to eat right on the road.” Some streak

Cal Tech’s men’s basketball earned its first conference victory in more than 26 years Tuesday when senior forward Ryan Elmquist made a go-ahead free throw with three secondsremaining in a 46-45 victory over Occidental. ESPN noted that many things happend in 1995, the year the streak began:

Pete Rose broke Ty Cobb’s alltime major league hits record.

Dwight Gooden led the majors with a 1.53 ERA.

Patrick Ewing was the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft following the first draft lottery.

Wayne Gretzky led the Edmonton Oilers to the Stanley Cup.

Microsoft released its first version of Windows.
