— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 26, 1911

Little Rock has enjoyed a number of exciting elections during this, the open season, including the primaries, the queen’s contest and other kinds, but the genuine dyed-in-the-wool, real exciting event of all has just been announced, the bachelors’ contest. This will be similar to the queen’s contest now in progress, and will be conducted by Robert C. Newton camp of the United Confederate Veterans. It has been predicted that there will be such a battle of ballots as has never been before witnessed in this city.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 26, 1961

Fiscal experts estimate it will take $4.2 million a year to pay debt service on the proposed institutional building bonds once the entire $60 million authorized are issued. Two tax sources would be tapped under Gov. Faubus’ proposal to support the issue: “Excess” horse racing revenues and “excess” use tax. Estimates on the amount of money these two sources will produce vary from a minimum of $1.6 million to $2.9 million a year.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 26, 1986

A provision of the state’s Grand Gulf settlement will allow Arkansas Power & Light Co. to increase its rates by another $30 million, or 3.7 percent annually, beginning Saturday. The increase will mean that AP&L rates have gone up 13.9 percent or $111 million a year since Sept. 9, when the settlement of the company’s rate case relating to the Mississippi nuclear plant was approved by the state Public Service Commission.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 26, 2001 WASHINGTON - Gov. Mike Huckabee told a national television audience Sunday that there is a lot of “embarrassment” in Arkansas over former President Clinton’s last-minute flurry of pardons before leaving office and questions of payments and improper access surrounding them. “I think people are beginning to feel that the bridge to the 21st century is a toll bridge that people have to pay to get across.” Huckabee said on NBC’s Meet The Press in reference to Clinton’s oftused phrase to describe his last term in office.
