— BASKETBALL Davis to Cavaliers

Just hours before the NBA trading deadline, the struggling Cleveland Cavaliers acquired point guardBaron Davis and an unprotected 2011 first-round draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers for guard Mo Williams and forward Jamario Moon. At 10-47, the Cavaliers have the league’s worst record in their first seasonwithout LeBron James, the twotime league MVP who bolted for Miami as a free agent last summer. Cleveland General Manager Chris Grant’s goal has been to add draft picks to replenish his roster, and he’ll go into June’s draft with two first-round and two second-round picks. In Cleveland, the 31-year-old Davis will be reunited with Coach Byron Scott. The two clashed repeatedly during their time in New Orleans, but Scott said they fixed their relationship last summer. The Cavaliers are taking on Davis’ huge contract, another sign that owner Dan Gilbert is determined to get his team back on top. Davis is owed $29 million over the next two seasons. The Clippers are taking on Williams’ $9.3 million contract this season. He has player options over the next two years, so Los Angeles may be able to get him off their books if things don’t work out. Moon’s $3 million contract expires after this season. The Cavaliers later acquired rookie forward Luke Harangody and rookie center Semih Erden from the Boston Celtics for a second-round pick in 2013. Cleveland waived veteran forward Leon Powe to make roster room after the two deadline trades. Powe signed with the Cavaliers in 2009 and previously played in Boston.

The Houston Rockets traded forward Shane Battier and guard Ish Smith to the Memphis Grizzlies for center Hasheem Thabeet, forward DeMarre Carroll and a first-round draft pick. The Rockets also sent point guard Aaron Brooks to the Phoenix Suns in exchange for guard Goran Dragic. The Grizzlies also tried to swap guard O.J. Mayo to Indiana in a deal that wasn’t concluded before Thursday’s trade deadline. Owner Michael Heisley said it was a bittersweet situation because Memphis was trying to ease a crowd at guard and add help at the 2-3 position.

The Boston Celtics dealt center Kendrick Perkins and guard Nate Robinson to the Oklahoma City Thunder for forward Jeff Green, center Nenad Krstic, a future firstround pick and cash.

The Charlotte Bobcats have agreed to trade forward Gerald Wallace to the Portland Trail Blazers for center Joel Przybilla and reserve forward Dante Cunningham. Charlotte also sent backup center Nazr Mohammed to Oklahoma City for reserve forward D.J. White and guard Morris Peterson.

The Sacramento Kings acquired swingman Marquis Daniels and cash considerations from the Boston Celtics in exchange for a second-round pick in 2017.

First-year Texas-El Paso Coach Tim Floyd was reprimanded by Conference USA on Thursday after an on-court outburst that got him ejected and then escorted off the court by a police officer during his team’s loss at East Carolina on Wednesday night. The Miners (20-8, 8-5 Conference USA) were whistled for 27 fouls and five technicals in the 83-76 loss at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C. The Pirates (14-13, 6-7) went 35 for 45from the free-throw line. Floyd started screaming at one of the officials early in the second half, and when he earned his first technical, he stormed onto the court and confronted one of the referees. Eventually, a police officer stationed at courtside intervened and led Floyd to the locker room. League Commissioner Britton Banowsky said he talked to Floyd and UTEP Athletic Director Bob Stull on Thursday before issuing the reprimand. Assistant coach Phil Johnson also received two technicals and was ejected, along with Floyd, with 18:48 left in the game.

FOOTBALL NFL will institute tests

The NFL will recommend team doctors and trainers use a standardized sideline test to diagnose concussions next season. The announcement is scheduled for this morning at the league’s annual scouting combine. Dr. Margot Putukian, chairman of the NFL’s subcommittee on return-to-play issues, told The Associated Pressthe new guidelines will instruct teams to ask the same questions on baseline tests. They also want doctors and trainers to use balance tests for the first time. But the new policy will not be mandated by league officials, Putukian says. League officials have put more attention on protecting players from head injuries since instituting more stringent concussion policies the past two seasons.

MOTOR SPORTS Kanaan may not race

Tony Kanaan does not have enough sponsorship to join de Ferran Dragon Racing this season, and the lack of funding likely means the team won’t run the IndyCar season. The 2004 IndyCar champion lost his ride with Andretti Autosport at the end of last season because of a lack of sponsorship, and he didn’t secure the corporate backing to make it to the March 27 season opener in St. Petersburg, Fla. Kanaan posted on his Twitter page that he is “not giving up.” The Indianapolis Star first reported Wednesday that Kanaan did not have enough sponsorship to race for de Ferran. Team co-owner Gil de Ferran says the team will likely not be able to participate this season.
