Making Up Days

The Bentonville School District will be released from school June 8 with the use of the spring break dates and Monday. The district would have been released June 10 without the scheduled make-up days. If two Saturdays are used the district will be released June 6.

Last week, district faculty and staff approved using March 21 and March 22 as make-up days, reducing spring break to three days. State law mandates faculty and staff vote on changes in contract or working conditions.

The board approved the days 6-1 with board President Travis Riggs voting no. Riggs said he thought using the days would be a burden on principals and teachers.

Superintendent Gary Compton reported 75 to 100 teachers or more may be absent because of planned vacations.

A database of more than 200 substitutes will help fill the place of absent teachers, Steve Potts, executive director of human resources said.

Brad Reed, district director of student services, said schools will work with students with planned vacations.

“It is pretty clear we are not going to make everyone happy no matter what,” said Marshall Ney, a board member. “If over two-thirds of the faculty supported these days that is good enough for me.”

Faculty and staff may also vote on using two Saturdays to make up days. Compton said March 5 and April 2 are being considered.

“Our building principals would support adding two Saturdays,” Compton said.

Students attended school Monday after district employees approved it as a make-up day. The day was scheduled for professional development.
