LITTLE ROCK — Choosing slipcovers isn’t as easy as it sounds, because the market offers a wide variety of furniture covers. Some will do wonders for your furniture’s appearance, while others simply hang awkwardly and look shabby (and we’re not talking shabby chic). It’s important to know how to properly choose slipcovers before you buy.
Choosing color and style
may seem secondary to such considerations as price and fit, but it’s also important to have an idea of the look you want for your furniture. Do you want to add color to your beige sofa or tone down the patterning on your hand-medown floral chair? Or are you simply trying to hide the wear and tear on an older couch? Also, knowing whether you want a fitted or looser feel can help you narrow your search.
Price is always an important consideration.
Slipcovers can cost anywhere from $50 to well over $400. Have a price point in mind before you shop.
Pick your fabric carefully.
Tightly woven fabrics are recommended for most slipcovers simply because they do a better job of protecting your furniture from wear and tear.
Heavier fabrics like denim, twill or cotton duck are recommended for families with children or pets, while simple cotton or polyester blends work well for single people and families with older children.
Fabric weight will also determine how cool your furniture feels in the summer and how warm it is in the winter.In a warm climate, cotton may be your best friend. Cooler climates can take heavier fabrics.
Measure the furniture you’re covering carefully.
Your measurements could be the difference between buying a slipcover that looks almost custom-made and one that looks ill-fitted.
For sofas, love seats and chairs, measure the seat width using a tape measure rather than a yardstick, which won’t measure the curves of your furniture. Some sofas, love seats and chairs have Tshaped cushions, while others have box cushions. Be sure to buy a slipcover specifically designed for whichever type of cushions you have.
Also measure the arm width on your furniture. For wing chairs, measure the total back height and the seat width. For recliners, measure around the entire back of the chair to find out how big the slipcovers should be. On dining room chairs, measure the height and width. Knowing these measurements will help you find the right size and shape slipcover for your furniture.
Look for slipcovers that are stain-resistant
or can be Scotchgarded. These slipcovers are particularly useful for pet owners and parents. Washable fabrics are also preferable for busy parents who don’t always have the time or money for dry cleaning.
