SPRINGDALE

Betty Jean Walker, 82, passed away peacefully on Oct. 23, 2010, at The Maples in Springdale. She was a 62-year resident of Springdale, and active in local, state and national organizations.

Betty was born in Seligman, Mo., to E.C. and Ruth McClain Hooker as the youngest of four children. She graduated high school in Seligman, then attended both Southwest Missouri State in Springfield and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. She was a featured singer with a local orchestra while in Springfield.

After she came to Springdale, Betty owned and operated the Springdale Credit Bureau and was also the original business manager of Springdale Memorial Hospital (now Northwest Medical Center).

Her local activities included serving on the Washington County Selective Service Draft Board, Beta Sigma Phi and she was a member of the First United Methodist Church.

Betty was active in the Republican Party on the county, state and national level, including serving as a voting delegate to two Republican National Conventions. She was appointed by President George H.W. Bush to the Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Services (DACOWITS) in the Department of Defense.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one brother and one sister. She is survived by her husband, William C. "Bill" Walker of the home; daughters, Jeanne Walker of Louisville, Ky., and Jan Walker of Springdale; her sister, Teena Carpenter of Fayetteville; one grandchild; and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Oct. 26, at the Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale. A memorial service at will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 27, at Sisco Chapel on with the Rev. Judy VanHoose officiating. There will be a private family burial.

Pallbearers are David Carpenter, Joe Herriman, Adrian Luttrell, Jim Crouch, Clay Galloway and Paul Bynum Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Stuart Hooker, Brent Hooker, Kendall Carpenter, Jim Cypert, Pierce Smith, Howard Sutton, Paul Davis, Gene Thompson, Harold Beisel, Andy Penzo, Don Marts, Bobby Hopper, Ken Galloway, Jim Buchanan, and Betty's chapter of Beta Sigma Phi.

The family wishes to express their deep gratitude to the staff of The Maples at Har-Ber Meadows, who for five years consistently treated Betty with respect, good humor and loving care. They also wish to thank the kind and supportive staff of Circle of Life Hospice in Springdale.

CEDAR HILL, Texas

Glenda Kay Sines Barber, age 61, of Cedar Hill, Texas, died Friday, Oct. 8, 2010, at her home in Cedar Hill. She was born May 2, 1949, to Norwood Hart and Marjorie Page Sines.

Glenda attended Arkansas Tech and made a career as a paralegal in Dallas. She enjoyed the Dallas Cowboys and Rangers and was a great fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks, attending their games when possible.

Glenda was a devoted wife, mother and special friend to her cousins and their families; she will be deeply missed.

She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Henry Barber; one son, Adam Hart Barber of Cedar Hill, Texas; one aunt, Lorraine Sines Holland; and several cousins.

Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010, in the Wesley Chapel at Central United Methodist Church in Fayetteville, under the direction of Moore's Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Gary Lunsford.

WEST MEMPHIS

Helen Jane Rogers Cato died Oct. 23, 2010.

She was born Aug. 13, 1919, to Rose Sinclair and Henry Nelson Rogers in Pottsville, Ark. She is preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Daryl "Pete" Cato, who died in 1970; her parents; and two sisters, Marhea Rogers Wilson and Judy Rogers Rogers.

She attended Arkansas Tech for two years and graduated from Arkansas Teachers College, now known as University of Central Arkansas. He degree was home economics.

She lived most of her life in Earle, Ark., where she was a homemaker and active in the First Presbyterian Church. She later returned to teaching and taught the second grade in Earle.

Survivors include Judy Carol Cato Haddad (John), Ellen Cato Crouthers and Linda Cato Humphries (Steve); five grandchildren, Ellis Haddad, Nelson Haddad, Court Crouthers, Matt Humphries and Laura Humphries Dickinson; and seven great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a sister, Nell Rogers Townsend of San Marino, Calif.

We would like to thank the staff at Briarwood Nursing Home for the outstanding care she received over the last 4 1/2 years.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. today at Roller Citizen's Funeral Home in West Memphis. There will be a service immediately following the visitation. The interment will be at Crittenden County Memorial Park.

CANE HILL

Mattie Virginia Barrett, 96, of Cane Hill died Oct. 24, 2010, at Prairie Grove Health and Rehab in Prairie Grove.

She was born June 11, 1914, in Ethel, Miss., to James and Maudie Walters Conn. She was a member of the Church of God in Lincoln.

Survivors include two sons, Davis Barrett of Joaquin, Texas, and Bennie Barrett of Cane Hill; seven grandchildren; and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. today at the Church of God in Lincoln. Burial will be in the Cane Hill Cemetery in Cane Hill.

Arrangements are by Luginbuel Funeral Home of Prairie Grove.
