Ohio soldier dies of air-jump injury

COLUMBUS, Ohio - An Ohio National Guard soldier died four days after being injured in a parachuting accident during an airborne training exercise, officials said.

The guard says the soldier died early Sunday morning at a hospital in Columbus. The Franklin County coroner has identified him as 59-year-old Herbert Mills of Groveport;

his rank wasn’t released.

Coroner Jan Gorniak says the cause of death hasn’t been determined, but an autopsy is scheduled for today.

The soldier was one of four who were taken to hospitals after jumps Wednesday afternoon at the Rickenbacker Air National Guard Base.

Officials said the men caught a wind gust and hit the ground hard after they parachuted from a plane.

Wind speeds at the airport at the time were 15 mph, with gusts up to 22 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

One of the men landed on the airport tarmac, while the other three came down on the grass. The other soldiers were ages 26 to 45.

Priest abuse case

records released

SAN DIEGO - Attorneys for nearly 150 people who claim sexual abuse by Roman Catholic priests released thousands of pages of previously sealed internal church documents Sunday that detail complaints against the clerics and include medical records and correspondence between priests and their superiors.

A retired San Diego Superior Court judge ruled late Friday that roughly 10,000 pages of internal records could be made public after a years-long legal battle with the Diocese of San Diego.

The records are from the personnel files of 48 priests who were either credibly accused or convicted of sexual abuse or were named in a civil lawsuit.

The 144 plaintiffs settled with the diocese in 2007 for nearly $200 million, but the agreement stipulated that an independent judge would review the priests’ sealed personnel records and determine what could be made public.

Attorneys for the plaintiffs said Sunday that the files show how much the diocese knew about abusive priests, and that some church leaders shuffled priests from parish to parish or overseas despite credible complaints against them.

Suspect charged in factory slayings

CLEVELAND - Police say a man has been charged with murder in the shooting deaths of two people at an Ohio manufacturing plant.

The aggravated-murder charges filed Sunday come two days after authorities say Pedro Rodriguez killed 49-year-old Graciela Morales outside the Cleveland factory where she worked.

Police say Rodriguez used Morales’ employee identification card to get inside the building and then shot her co-worker Eduardo Pupo. Rodriguez is scheduled to appear in court today; it wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

A spokesman for the Cuyahoga County coroner says autopsies show Morales was shot four times and Pupo six times.

Authorities say Morales had filed a stalking report against Rodriguez in July but decided not to press charges.
