Bulldogs Head Into Conference Meet

— Fayetteville cross country coach Michelle Fyfe couldn’t make any bold predictions heading into this week’s 7A-West Conference meet.

There are too many questions up in the air for even Fyfe to know how well her boys and girls teams will do competing Tuesday at Agri Park.

While Fayetteville is young and has injury concerns on the boys side, Fyfe is confident that junior Aidan Swain could finish in the top 3 at the conference meet. He’s coming off a fifth-place finish at the Chile Pepper Festival on Oct. 16.

“He’s a smart kid. He knows how to race,” Fyfe said, adding that Swain is peeking at the right time in the season. “He’s going to do well.”

The Lady Bulldogs, with their top three runners being seniors, are more experienced than their male counterparts. Fyfe said senior Kate Bucknam has a chance to earn a top 3 finish, and depending on what happens, the team could post a strong performance.

“If the senior girls have the races that they’ve been running all season and the sophomores get a little more confidence and we’re running on our home course, I really think our girls might really do well,” Fyfe said. “And I think that’s pretty exciting.”
