Burglar Leaves Bomb At Drug Store

— A police officer found a bomb Friday inside a bag of tools left at the scene of a burglary.

The device was found after a burglary at USA Drugs, 2300 W. Sunset Ave.

The Bentonville Bomb Squad defused the device after finding some small pipes packed with black powder. The pipes were about 5 inches to 6 inches long and no bigger than 2 inches in diameter, said Lt. Kevin Lewis with the Springdale Police Department.

The bomb was big enough to be dangerous, Lewis said.

“If it had gone off in your hand, it could have killed you,” Lewis said.

A store employee, Michael Hollowell, reported at 12:30 p.m. the burglary, after finding a hole cut through the roof. He reported at 2:30 p.m. the discovery of a bag of tools behind the store, assumed to be those used in the burglary.

An officer looked in the bag and realized it also contained the pipe bomb, Lewis said. The squad arrived at the scene about 3 p.m. and remained until about 5:30 p.m. Sunset Avenue remained open because the squad was working at the back of the store, Lewis said.

Employees did not discover anything missing from the store and no suspects have been identified, Lewis said.
