Northwest Arkansas achievers

— Victor C.X. Wang, a graduate of the University of Arkansas’ College of Education and Health Professions, has been named editor-in-chief of The International Journal of Adult Vocational Education and Technology.

George Denny, Gary Ritter, Kit Kacirek and Jules Beck - all faculty in the UA College of Education and Health Professions - will serve on the journal’s editorial board. Barbara Hinton, the college’s associate dean for academic affairs, will serve as an associate editor.

The journal, published by IGI Global, will look at educational technologies for adult learners. The journal will draw on theory, research, practice and individual experience.

Wang is an associate professor of teacher education at California State University at Long Beach.

Abigail Nietert, a student at the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith, placed first in the employee training and development competition at the Phi Beta Lambda NationalLeadership Conference held July 8-12 in Nashville, Tenn.

Nietert, who is originally from Lowell, also placed ninth in the international business category.

Other UA Fort Smith students to place include Travis Bolton of Greenwood, who placed second in human resource management; and Tamara Reno of Russellville and Ching Wong of Van Buren, who placed third in the financial services competition.

Quincy Spencer has been named director of theUniversity of Arkansas’ First Year Experience, or FYE, programs.

Spencer has a bachelor’s degree in political science and a master’s degree in student personnel services from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La. He was hired by the UA in 2007 as an associate FYE director.

As associate director, he spearheaded changes to the orientation process, Rock Camp and many other firstyear initiatives. Spencer’s first day was July 1.

Mayra Hoch, a student at the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, took third place in free enterprise project competition at the 2010 Phi Beta Lambda National Leadership Conference.

Hoch was one of six top-10 finishers at the conference from the university. She also was named to Who’s Who in PBL in Arkansas, and, along with fellow student Tony Fernandez, she received career and membership achievement recognition.
