Abilene Christian teammates top leaderboard

Tyler Sheppard of Midland, Texas, shot a 4-under-par 68 Saturday and surged into the lead after two rounds of the Maumelle Classic at Maumelle Country Club.

Sheppard’s two-day total is 7-under 137, one stroke better than defending champion Alex Carpenter of Little Rock. Carpenter shot a 1-under 71 Saturday and is at 6 under for the tournament.

Sheppard and Carpenter are teammates on the Abilene Christian University golf team.

Jonesboro’s Austin Cook (Arkansas Razorbacks) is third at 5 under, tied with Stetson McMillan of Hideaway, Texas, who plays at Stephen F. Austin.

The final round takes place today.

FISHING

Rook 12th, Short 14th in New York

Scott Rook of Little Rock finished 12th and Kevin Short of Mayflower was 14th at the Bassmaster Northern Open on Saturday at Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh, N.Y.

Rook caught 5 bass weighing 15 pounds, 15 ounces for a three-day total of 49-11 and earned $4,000. Short earned $2,857 with 5 bass weighing 14-14 for a total of 49-4.

Dave Wolak of Wake Forest, N.C., won with a three-day total of 54-1.

BASEBALL

Arkadelphia wins 14-year-old title

Arkadelphia took control with a five-run third inning and defeated Bryant 10-3 to win the Babe Ruth 14-year-old state championship Wednesday at Holland Park in Benton.

Jakahari Howell and Austin White each had two RBI for Arkadelphia.
