Orchid Group Convenes Today

— The Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m. today at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale.

The meeting is open to anyone interested in growing orchids.

The program today will be “Back to Basics” to help the society’s many new and newer growers. Members are encouraged to bring any problem plants and to ask specific or general questions about the mysteries of orchid growing.

Nebraska Club To Roast Hog

The Nebraska Club will hold a hog roast Aug. 20 at Blowing Springs Park in Bella Vista.

Social hour will be at 4:30 p.m., with entertainment at 5:30 p.m and dinner at 6:15 p.m.

Special entertainment will be Chris Mortensen, award-winning journalist and accomplished reporter covering the NFL.

Cost is $10 per adult and $5 for children 4 to 12. Participants should send checks to K.B. Smith, 9 Windsor Lane, Bella Vista, AR 72715. Deadline for registration is Aug. 13.

GOP Women Meeting Monday

The Bella Vista Republican Women will hold their monthly meeting in Concordia’s recreation room starting at 9 a.m. Monday with coffee. The meeting begins at 9:30 p.m.

This month’s speaker will be Anita Werts, chairwoman of the Bella Vista Property Owners Association board of directors. She will talk about plans for Bella Vista and will be answering questions.

On Aug. 30, the Republican Women will hold their annual card party and game day at the Metfield Golf Club. Included will be door prizes, a silent auction and a buffet lunch. Tickets are on sale now for $15 each.

Ladies wanting to play should get a group together, and bring the cards or table game.

Iota Alpha Chapter To Attend Concert

Beta Sigma Phi Bella Vista Iota Alpha Chapter members and spouses will gather at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Blowing Springs Park to attend the Bella Vista Community Concert Band summer series.

Individuals should bring their own dinner or plan to purchase it there.

Ladies Day Out Will Attend Play

Ladies Day Out will be going to the Rogers Little Theater Aug. 8, for the performance of “South Pacific.” The cost is $42, which includes lunch.

The group will meet at the church parking lot across from Arvest Bank at Town Center at noon. Seating will be at 12:30 p.m., with the play starting at 2 p.m.

Kingsdale Squares Schedule Dance

Elks Lodge Installs Officers

Rogers-Bentonville Elks Lodge 2144 installed new officers for 2010-11. Officers are Exalted Ruler Victoria Kindellan, Leading Knight Bobby Cates,Loyal Knight David E. Witt and Lecturing Knight Robert Godwin. The board of trustees includes Daniel Cowin, Chris Culver, Mike Kindellan, Larry Reed and John Chestrom. Other officers named are Secretary Bob Shumate, Treasurer Kristina Dubon, Tiler Bob Rudd, Inner Guard Earl West and Esquire Wade Kamps.

The lodge meets the second and fourth Monday of the month and has music, dinner and dancing for its members each Friday.

Lions Conduct Annual Meeting

The Bentonville Noon Lions Club held the group’s annual meeting on June 17 at Concordia.

District Gov. Earl Sears inducted Sandra Cox and Virginia Cichy as new members.

He installed the officers who will serve in fiscal 2011. They were Howard Hoogshagen, president; Bette Hendrix, secretary; Marvin Mickelson, treasurer; Richard Willows, first vice president; Ron Peterson, second vice president; Darrell Cox, director to serve one year; Carl Holm, director to serve two years; Ron Peterson, Lion tamer; Carl Holm, tail twister; and Darline Shelton, membership chairwoman.

The members chose one Lion to become a Melvin Jones Fellow. Carl Holm was chosen.

Joe Kern received the Lion of the Year Award. David Henry received the Dalstrom Award.

Lion David Henry assists in the club’s efforts by helping indigent residents in the club’s assigned territory with obtaining glasses. This includes securing eye examinations at no cost.

The community assists the organization in its efforts by supporting fundraising activities such as White Cane Days, flag placements for special days and the sale of fruit in February.

Gardeners Address Food Preservation

Washington County Master Gardeners will present a one-day seminar, “Practical Applications for Cooking and Preserving Vegetables,” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the University of Arkansas Cooperative Extension Service Office, 2536 N. McConnell Ave. in Fayetteville.

The seminar will offer a series of classes on drying and freezing vegetables and fruits, canning and pickling and cooking with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Cost of the seminar is $25 and includes snacks, lunch, tastings and a CD with recipes. Persons interested in this adults-only class should send a check or money order to Joyce Mendenhall at the Extension Office.

Democratic Women Meeting Tuesday

The Washington County Democratic Women’s Club will hold its monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Savor Restaurant, 2217 N. College Ave. in Fayetteville.

Speakers will be Diana Worthen and Susie Hoeller.

Worthen will give statistics related to immigrants in Arkansas. Hoeller will present an educational overview of immigration reform issues at the federal level and also provide information about the Arizona law and the challenges to it. Hoeller is an international lawyer practicing law in Bentonville and is president of the American Center for International Policy Studies.

The club will also be collecting backpacks for the Farmington schools.
