Man Escapes, Briefly, From County Jail

— An inmate escaped briefly from the Benton County Jail on Friday morning before being caught by police a few blocks northeast of the jail.

Daniel Pearson, 36, of 309 E. Third St. in Russellville was on an inmate work crew at the jail. He walked away about 12:10 p.m., according to a news release from the Benton County Sheriff's Office.

Three minutes after his escape was noted, a resident contacted Bentonville police about an inmate running in the area behind the sheriff's office, according to the report. Bentonville officers observed Pearson running near Eighth and I streets, where he was captured.

Pearson was free for about 11 minutes, according to the release.

Before he escaped, Pearson was awaiting transport to the Arkansas Department of Correction with a 15-year sentence for breaking or entering and theft of property, according to jail records.

He now faces an additional charge of second-degree felony escape, jail records show.
