SUPERMARKET SLEUTH: Restaurant-good dip can be eaten at home

— A friend recently introduced me to cheese dip from a company out of Memphis named El Terrifico Tamale Co. Qualitywise it’s on par with the dip served at most of the Mexican restaurants my family frequents, and it’s convenient because you don’t have to make a special trip to a restaurant just for dip when you have a craving.

My favorite is the Mild White Cheese Dip, available at Sam’s Club stores in 32-ounce tubs that cost about $8. They also sell a 16-ounce tub ($4.50) at Kroger, Wal-Mart Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets.

The company also markets a Mild Yellow Cheese Dip and Tamales, which aren’t sold in our local stores. But they are all available on El Terrifico’s website, www.elterrifico.com.

General Mills recently introduced its new Total Plus Omega-3s Cereal, which is a tasty combination of whole grain flakes, flax clusters and honey-sweetened almonds. A one-cup serving contains 200 calories and 4 grams of fiber. A 12.25-ounce box sells for about $3.40 at most stores.

Banquet has a new line of mini Fruit Pies in Apple, Peach and Cherry Berry flavors. They can be microwaved or baked in a conventional oven. I tried the peach version and it was good, but not as flavorful as I had hoped it would be.

A whole pie is considered one serving (the peach flavor contains 360 calories, 15 grams of fat and 2 grams of fiber per serving) but the pies would make a nice after-dinner treat for two people.

Look for Banquet’s new Fruit Pies in your grocer’s freezer section by the pot pies, where they should sell for about $1 each.
