School Board Candidates File In Washington County

— Three more candidates filed to run for Washington County school board seats in the Sept. 21 school elections.

Justin Eichmann, a Springdale attorney who lives in Fayetteville, filed Monday to seek the Zone 3 seat on the Fayetteville School Board. He wants to replace Tim Kring on the board and so far is the only candidate for the post.

Kring, first appointed to fill a board vacancy in 2004, decided not to seek re-election to a five-year term.

Jim Ayers filed for re-election to Position 3 on the Lincoln School Board. The seat carries a five-year term. Ayers currently is the board president.

Paula Schoonover is the first Greenland School District patron to file for election to that board from Zone 2. She was instrumental in developing a Save our School fundraising campaign two years ago after the Arkansas Department of Education took over the school district for recurring financial problems.

A new seven-member board will be elected in Greenland for the first time in two years. The board running the district at the time of the state takeover was disbanded.

The filing period continues until noon Friday. Ballot positions in contested races will be drawn by the Washington County Election Commission next week.

Five candidates filed for school board seats when filing opened last Friday. They are: Bryn Bagwell, Fayetteville Zone 2; Herbert Dorman, Farmington; Laren Vaught, Elkins; Beth Everett, Prairie Grove; and Deborah Harnish, West Fork.

In all, 10 seats are up for grabs in addition to the seven seats in Greenland.

Voters will also decide millage questions during the school election. Fayetteville and Springdale are seeking millage increases to pay for new construction in those respective districts.
