Council Clears Way For Temporary Businesses

— Mobile seasonal vendors, temporary offices and food stands are welcome in Fayetteville’s business environment. The City Council altered the city’s development codes to prove it.

“We feel this enables an entrepreneur to come into Fayetteville and use a space for a particular time and check out if this is going to work,” Jeremy Pate, director of Fayetteville development services, told the council on Tuesday.

In the past, there were few provisions in the city’s development code to allow temporary businesses. They also had a 90-day limit. Under the new development code temporary businesses will apply for a conditional use permit, which can be issued for longer periods of time.

“Each temporary business would be reviewed independently for the time requested, so there’s not a specific time limitation,” Pate said. “I would think it would be such that it’s not considered ‘permanent,’ though.”

Businesses must still meet all zoning guidelines, and the conditional use permit would outline any provisions the business needs to take care of to ensure compatibility with the area it’s located within, planning officials said.
