Shiloh defensive lineman commits to Kansas State

Shiloh Christian defensive lineman Samuel Harvill orally committed to Kansas State on Saturday, said Saints Coach Josh Floyd.

Harvill, 6-1, 269 pounds, had offers from UNLV, SMU and Cincinnati. He visited Kansas State at the end of February and met with Wildcats Coach Bill Snyder.

“They did a really good job recruiting him,” Floyd said. “He really liked the coaches a lot. They’ve been the favorite since he started that relationship.”

Harvill was the Democrat-Gazette’s Sophomore Defensive Player of the Year in 2008 after making 96 tackles, including 24 1 /2 for losses, and 16 sacks. Last year he had 80 tackles, 13 1 /2 for losses and 10 sacks.

TRACK AND FIELD

Hendrix women fifth, men eighth

Hendrix College’s women recorded 76 points for fifth place as host of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships in Conway.

The Hendrix men finished eighth with 30 points.

Rhodes College’s men and women won the team titles.

Hendrix senior Jerry Maldonado won the men’s high jump for the third consecutive year with a leap of 2.03 meters (about 6 feet, 8 inches).

State athletes win in Monroe

UALR seniors Kirby Atkins (hammer throw) and Aaron Batey (800 meters) won their events Saturday at the ULM Warhawk Classic in Monroe, La.

Atkins won with a throw of 56.70 meters to set a school record. He was second in the discus with a throw of 55.29 meters.

Batey won the 800 in 1 minute, 54.96 seconds.

Arkansas State’s Corwin Pace won the shot put with 16.01 meters, and teammate Bailey Bunyan won the 3,000 in 8:50.61.

In women’s competition, Arkansas State’s Caitlin Winey won the 100 hurdles in 13.99 and the 400 hurdles in 1:01.57; Dawn L’Heurux won the 800 in 2:22.23; Julia Agawu won the women’s discus with 45.63; and Samantha Salinas won the 3,000 in 10:55.70.

BASEBALL

Lyon takes series from Mid-Continent

After a two-hour, eight-minute rain delay, Lyon College (27-17, 8-7 Tran-South Conference) rolled to a 14-3 victory over Mid-Continent (9-33, 3-12) on Saturday at Cougar Field in Mayfield, Ky.

Garry Richards (3-3) pitched all seven innings for the Scots to get the victory. He allowed 8 hits and 3 earned runs, striking out 8 and walking 1.

Lyon designated hitter Michael Armenteros homered twice, scored twice and drove in three runs.

Henderson State sweeps UAM

Henderson State (31-16, 12-8) completed its third consecutive Gulf South Conference series sweep, beating Arkansas-Monticello 15-10 and 6-5 in a doubleheader Sunday at Clyde Berry Field in Arkadelphia.

Henderson State’s Jonathan Dooley had two hits and three RBI in the opener.

In the finale, Evan Eary (3-0) pitched the final 2 2 /3 innings, retiring eight consecutive batters and striking out three to win.

Arkansas Baptist splits

Ben Short had an RBI double and Matt Buie’s RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave Arkansas Baptist College (23-23) a 4-3 victory over Seminole State on Sunday at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock. Arkansas Baptist lost the second game 15-0.

In the opener, Cody Riley went 7 1 /3 innings in the no-decision. Michael Brown (4-5) pitched the last 2 2 /3 innings for the victory.

In Game 2, Andrew Acklin (4-4) was the losing pitcher. Beau Fulcher had two hits for Arkansas Baptist.

Harding, Arkansas Tech split

Lucas Waddell (6-1) pitched a four-hitter, inducing a ground-ball triple play, and Anthony Guglielmi hit a three-run home run as Harding beat Arkansas Tech 5-0 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday in Searcy. Arkansas Tech won the first game 7-3 as Blaine Sims (6-3) only 2 earned runs in 7 innings.

SOFTBALL

OBU clinches spot in GSC Tournament

Ouachita Baptist split with Christian Brothers, winning 9-1 and losing 5-2, but earned a spot in the Gulf South Conference Tournament Sunday at Sully Anderson Field in Arkadelphia.

Ouachita (36-22, 14-16 GSC West) used a dominating performance on both ends in Game 1 against Christian Brothers (17-29, 6-20 GSC West). Ouachita junior starter Kristen Rigsbee (19-9) went the distance and allowed four hits and one earned run for the victory. Junior Sarah Bell added 4 RBI and propelled the Lady Tigers to seven runs combined in the fourth and fifth innings for the run-rule victory.

In Game 2, Christian Brothers scored three runs in the opening two innings and never looked back. The Lady Buccaneers recorded three runs on Ouachita starter Kristen Rigsbee in the opening 1 2 /3 innings, and the Lady Tigers could only add two runs in the fourth for the rest of the game.

Henderson State sweeps SAU

Henderson State earned two road Gulf South Conference victories Sunday, completing a four game sweep of Southern Arkansas in Magnolia by scores of 3-1 and 9-8.

The two wins improve the Diamond Reddies to 27-24 overall on the season, and Henderson State will enter the Gulf South Conference postseason tournament with a 16-14 record in conference play.

The team will kick off the GSC tournament on Friday morning in Southaven, Miss. at 11 a.m. against West Florida (37-13 overall, 16-11 GSC). Henderson will then play another game at 2:30 p.m. against a team to be determined by the results of the game earlier in the day. If the team wins at least one game on Friday, the Diamond Reddies will again take the field at 11 am on Saturday.

UCA sweeps doubleheader

Kasey Britt hit a game-ending home run to lead Central Arkansas (22-27, 10-13 Southland Conference) to a 4-3 victory over Stephen F. Austin in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday at Farris Field in Conway. UCA won the second game 5-0 as Holli Hill and Kelsie Armstrong pitched a combined five-hit shutout, knocking Stephen F. Austin out of first place in the conference.
