— They're back - thousands of motorcycles, far more than authorities or even the most intrepid journalists among us would ever bother trying to count. Happily for sales-tax-backed governments across northwest Arkansas, this week's 10th annual Bikes, Blues & BBQ festival is just what the doctor ordered for struggling sales tax collections throughout the area, all of which could definitely use a spike in business.

As a recent Northwest Arkansas Times profile reported, however, the festival - which has morphed during its short existence into one of the country's premier motorcycle rallies - isn't necessarily great for everyone. Nightbird Books and Underwood's Fine Jewelers, both located on Dickson Street, sound prepared for at least the possibility that they won't make much bank this week. Not surprisingly, a lack of parking will be problematic forany number of downtown businesses. Also, there's the simple reality that many of our out-oftown road warriors aren't here to buy precious stones or browse the nonfiction aisle. They want to rev those engines, drink plenty (soft drinks, we're sure) and generally have a fun time.

We view the rally as a success for the community. Besides Razorback football games, what event draws this size of crowd to our wonderful city? For a few short days, these visitors contribute to all the characteristics that keep Fayetteville funky, as the local bumper sticker urges. It's exciting. It's different. We're glad to see the visitors arrive and, like guests invited for a great dinner party, we breathe a sigh of relief when they've had their fun, we've enjoyed their company and they are safely on their way back home. :
