— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1909

Anticipating in many counties that the revenue received from the county tax will exceed demands, as the result of the increase in property valuations and the discovery and assessment of much property that heretofore has escaped taxation, the members of the State Tax Commission, in their trips over the state on which they confer with all the county Equalization Boards, are suggesting to the county judges of those counties where the revenue is expected to exceed the demand, that the county levy be cut down when the Levying Boards meet in October.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1959 PINE BLUFF - All three schools in the Dollarway district, which had remained closed pending an appeal of a federal court integration order will open Friday for the fall term on a segregated basis. Following receipt of an 8th Circuit Court of Appeals mandate, reversing the immediate integration order, the Dollarway board met today to set the opening dates.

25 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1984 HOT SPRINGS - Breaking from tradition, the Arkansas State AFL-CIO convention Saturday endorsed a straight Democratic Party ticket, closing ranks around the party's nominees in every contested race with a single vote. Although the union federation has in the past given the nod to only Democratic contenders for political office, Saturday's endorsement of the ticket differed in that no individual decisions were made in each race. Veteran labor leaders said they couldn't recall when the state convention last endorsed a party's ticket, rather than its individual candidates.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 23, 1999

Eighty-six percent of the Arkansans who moved from welfare to work during a 15-month period were paid wages well below the poverty line, according to an independent evaluation of the state's new welfare system. Even after a year on the job when wages increased 13 percent, only a quarter of the former welfare recipients had incomes exceeding the poverty line, the evaluation found. The most common job for former welfare recipients was in eating and drinking establishments, according to the evaluation.
