Friends donate $5,000 to Bentonville library for Playaways

— On July 1, Playaway audiobooks were introduced as a new collection at the Bentonville Public Library, thanks to the Friends of the Library. Recently, the Friends of the Bentonville Library donated an additional $5,000 toward the Playaway collection.

"When the Friends heard about the successful launch and high circulation of our first Playaways, the group enthusiastically voted to donate more funds so we could add to our new collection," library director Hadi Dudley said in a news release. "Their continued support and generosity are a gift to our community. I appreciate our Friends so much."

With more than 100 titles purchased, the additional funding allows the library to debut Playaways in the children's audiobook collection. The is featuring awardwinners and juvenile classics such as "Charlotte's Web," "Pinocchio," "Jacob I Have Loved," "Tuck Everlasting," "Tale of Desperaux," "Black Beauty" and "Where the Red Fern Grows."

Several additional titles were purchased for adults, including more best sellers and many business and motivational resources, such as "The Joy of Selling" and "101 Secrets of Highly Effective Speakers and Management."

A Playaway is a preloaded digital audiobook on a small, portable device similar in size to an MP3 player. Playaways are available for checkout by library patrons. The audiobooks check out for three weeks, with a limit of three items per person, and carry a late fee of 10 cents per day. To use the technology, one AAA battery and a pair of earbuds are required. These items are not provided by the library but are available for purchase for a small cost- fee
