— 100 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1909

The Arkansas Railroad Commission yesterday issued an order to the Iron Mountain Railroad, requiring that road to construct a $25,000 addition to the depot at Fort Smith, work on the addition to be started within 60 days and to be completed within six months. The order includes a copy of the plans and calls for a modern building throughout. The new depot at Fort Smith, after the addition ordered yesterday is completed, will be one of the most modern and largest in the state, outside of Little Rock.

50 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1959 ST. LOUIS - The Dollarway School Board is using the Arkansas Pupil Placement Act "to defeat and frustrate" the U.S. Supreme Court desegregation decision, a Negro attorney for the NAACP from New York City contended today in the U.S. 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. Robert L. Carter told three judges of the circuit court that, unless the act is applied "generally" to each of the 2,300 pupils in the district, it merely reduces the principles of the U.S. Supreme Court's Brown decisions to a "ritualistic formula."25 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1984

Calling the program a "remarkable renaissance," Gov. Bill Clinton on Thursday said the Instructional Microcomputer Project for Arkansas Classrooms has had a profound impact on improving education in the state. Clinton addressed about 100 people in the cafeteria of Pine Forest Elementary School, where 24 Apple computers were installed as teaching aids to help students improve their math skills. Pine Forest in Maumelle was one of 22 schools in Arkansas chosen as pilots to determine the effectiveness of the program.

10 YEARS AGO Sept. 21, 1999

Today is election day in Arkansas' 310 school districts, with 29 asking voters to approve changes in the local property tax rates. The tax proposals range from a 0.08 mill increase in Perryville to a 12.9 mill increase in Mansfield in Sebastian County. The Earle School District is not asking for a tax increase but seeks voter approval of a transfer of 4 mills from operation and maintenance to debt service.
