Drive down just about any country lane in Benton County and you'll find a sign advertising fire wood for sale. Now would be a good time to lay in a load of seasoned wood with the frosty days and nights of winter just a calendar page or two away.

There are, however, two parts to having a successful season of heat coming from the fireplace - what you burn and where the smoke and soot goes after passing through the burning process.

To start with, seasoned wood is wood that has been allowed to dry for the better part of a year before burning. The more dense the wood, the longer it takes for the excess moisture to escape. Also, dry wood emits less byproducts that must travel up the flue to escape the top of the chimney. The more soot that collects in the flue of your chimney, the more likely you are to have a flue fire.

Which brings up the second piece of the flue fire triangle - having a chimney cleaned yearly to remove the soot that has collected there from the previous year. It only takes a few minutes for a certified chimney sweep to clean and inspect your flue, but the time and money they charge is well spent. Each year several homes in Benton County are destroyed by fire because a flue from a wood stove or fireplace is allowed to become caked with the super flammable materials found in an uncleared chimney.

The flickering flames of a fireplace are a pleasure to watch and enjoy as long as they stay contained with the brick and mortar of the mantle. Once the flames escape their safe confines anything from minor damage to total destruction of your home could be the final outcome.
