— VFW Robert M. Sterrett Post 9063

The National Veterans of Foreign Wars and VFW Robert M. Sterrett Post 9063 in Bella Vista are sponsoring two student patriotism contests. Local winners will receive U.S. Savings Bonds and be eligible for scholarships on a district and national level.

Students must return their entries to their school counselor ormail them directly to one of the listed contest chairmen or deliver them by hand by Nov. 1. Students who are homeschooled or attend public or private schools may enter.

A Patriotic Essay Contest for sixth- through eighth-graders requires an essay titled "When Is the Right Time to Honor Our Military Heroes?" Details and rules for the essay are given inthe entry blank.

A Voice of Democracy Contest for ninth- through 12th-graders requires a recorded essay on an audio disc or tape titled "Does America Still Have Heroes?" Details and rules for the contest are in the entry blank.

Bella Vista VFW Post and Auxiliary contest chairs are Lorna Sterrett at 855-6588 and Stephen Stilley at 464-4626.

Crazy Canasta Party

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Robert M. Sterrett Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in Bella Vista will host a community card party on Wednesday at the Post, 103 Veterans Way, adjacent to the Veterans Wall of Honor.

Refreshments will be served at 11:45 a.m., and play will commence at 12:15 p.m. All ladies are welcome to attend. Those who wish to may bring goodies to share. For more information, call Peggy at 855-0719 or Paulina at 268-6831.

NWA Genealogical Society

The group will meet at 6 p.m. Sept. 28 at the Bentonville Public Library. Dr. Cary Anderson will give a program on the Cherokee Trail of Tears, emphasizing the John Benge detachment that crossed central Benton County in early January 1839.
