SUN BELT MEN Finn leads way in Red Wolves’ victory

— Redshirt freshman guard Trey Finn had 13 points and 13 rebounds, both career highs, as Arkansas State earned a 98-60 victory over Central Baptist on Tuesday night at the Convocation Center.

Arkansas State (6-5) shot 56.3 percent from the field and set a season high for points.

Finn, who was 5 of 10 from the field and 3 of 5 from threepoint range, was one of six players with 10 or more points for the Red Wolves.

Arkansas State Coach John Brady said Finn (Little Rock Parkview) is probably “as goodof a rebounding guard that I have ever coached.

“Garrett Temple was probably a very good rebounding guard at LSU, and this guy here can rebound the ball,” said Brady, who earned career victory No. 300. “He is tough, and he is getting in better shape and getting comfortable.”

Freshman guard Brandon Reed led Arkansas State with 14 points. Junior forward Jeremy Thomas (Jonesboro) and freshman forward Brandon Peterson each scored 13, while sophomore forward Martavius Adams and freshman guard Adam Sterrenberg (Cabot) each had 12 points.

Junior guard Rashad Allison had 11 assists and scored nine points. Adams also had seven rebounds.

Adams scored the first eight points as the Red Wolves builta 12-0 lead five minutes into the game. The lead extended to 20-4 with 12:38 remaining in the first half off of a three pointer by Reed while Central Baptist (8-5) missed its first 12 shots.

ASU, which never trailed, led 53-29 at halftime, going 20 of 32 from the floor and making their first seven three-pointers. The Red Wolves’ largest lead was 45 when JeJuan Brown hit two free throws at the 3:57 mark of the second half.

Ryan Barnes scored 16 points to lead Central Baptist, the Conway school in its first year as an NAIA member.

The Red Wolves shot 42.9 percent from three-point range (9 of 21) and 73.9 percent from the free-throw line (17 of 23). They outscored the Mustangs 48-28 in the paint and outrebounded them 51-26.

SOUTHLAND WOMEN

CHICAGO STATE 78, CENTRAL ARKANSAS 62

CHICAGO - Central Arkansas (8-3) lost for the first time since Nov. 15, falling at Chicago State (5-10) to end an eight-game winning streak.

The Sugar Bears led 43-42 early in the second half, but fell behind after Chicago State reeled off a 28-5 run.

Megan Herbert led Central Arkansas with 29 points and 13 rebounds. Micah Rice added 10 points.

SWAC WOMEN

WICHITA STATE 68, ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 56

WICHITA, Kan. - A strong second half couldn’t make up for a sluggish first half, with Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-9) falling to Wichita State (8-3) at Koch Arena.

The Lady Lions were outscored 35-19 in the first half, keeping them out of the game despite outscoring Wichita State 37-33 in the second half.

Shay Holmes led Arkansas-Pine Bluff with 13 points, while Amanda Hammond (Morrilton) added 12.
