It is probable that the cotton oil mills in Arkansas will be closed down generally by the middle of January. It was stated yesterday by Col. A.D. Allen, manager of the Little Rock Cotton Oil Mill and also president of the Interstate Cotton Seed Crushers’ Association that this would probably be the fact.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 30, 1959

Arkansas citizens were called on today to do their “utmost” to avoid “leaving scars on the lives of the children and youth” of the state as a result of the integration controversy. The remarks were contained in Arkansas’ report to the 1960 White House Conference on Children and Youth. The report said one change in Arkansas in the decade from 1950 to 1960 would affect every child in the state. The change, the report said, stems from the U.S. Supreme Court’s desegregation decision.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 30, 1984

In hopes of eventually harvesting $400,000 for Philander Smith College of Little Rock more than 175 volunteers manned telephones Saturday during a telethon at television station KLRT-TV, Channel 16, in Little Rock. The Little Rock telethon was one of 75 simultaneous broadcasts around the country benefiting the United Negro College Fund.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 30, 1999 YELLVILLE - Nobody wanted to do it. But seven members of the Marion County Quorum Court decided that legally they had no choice. The Quorum Court grudgingly approved an ordinance Tuesday night adding 1.52 mills to the Yellville-Summit School District millage levy. The action brings the school district’s operation and maintenance millage to the 25-mill minimum mandated by Amendment 74 to the Arkansas Constitution.
