Cigarette, Space Heater Cause Fires In Bentonville

A cigarette is blamed for a blaze which sent Bentonville firefighters to a house fire at 2302 S.E. Ninth St. at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday.

Occupants were out of the house, which is located only approximately one-half mile from a fire station, and there were no injuries.

The fire began in the garage area of the house when a cigarette set a plastic container on fire, said B.J. Hyde, public information officer for the Bentonville Fire Department.

Damage was minimal, estimated at $500.

Hyde also said the investigation into a Sunday fire at a house at 207 N.W. Sixth St. revealed the blaze was started by a space heater too close to combustible material.

There were no injuries and no one at home at the time of the Sixth Street fire. The house, which was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived, was heavily damaged, Hyde said.
