— 100 YEARS AGO Dec. 29, 1909

Pointing out the many advantages that would accrue to the city of Little Rock if it could secure the 1911 national convention of the United Confederate Veterans, Gen. Jonathan Kellogg made an earnest appeal for aid before the Board of Trustees of the Permanent Entertainment Fund yesterday afternoon. The board, which apparently had not been inclined to consider the project favorably, appeared to give it more consideration as a result of General Kellogg’s address and will meet again today, at which time a final decision will be made.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 29, 1959

Negotiations are under way between Arkansas Power & Light Co. and rural electric cooperatives on renewal of power supply contracts. A spokesman for AP&L said that several of the co-op contracts expire “early in 1960” and others at varying times into 1965. Exactly what rate AP&L is asking for renewal of the purchase of wholesale power the spokesman declined to say, explaining: “It’s a matter of business negotiation.”25 YEARS AGO Dec. 29, 1984

U.S. District Judge G. Thomas Eisele on Friday ordered the state to pay $1.02 million for the cost of consolidating three school systems to form the South Conway County School District. Eisele had ordered the consolidation of the Plumerville, Morrilton and East Side (Menifee) school districts in 1979 to desegregate schools. In 1980, the judge ruled that because the state was chiefly responsible for the segregation problems of the districts, it would have to pay the costs of maintaining the quality of education in a consolidated district.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 29, 1999

North Little Rock city employees will not be receiving raises immediately next year until a study is done to determine which positions are necessary and which are considerably underpaid. The money for 2 percent employee raises, $660,000, is still set aside in the city’s 2000 budget which the City Council passed unanimously Tuesday night.
