At least $87,500 more will be turned into the state treasury to the credit of the general revenue fund during the coming year than was paid in during the past year, if the estimates of the new State Tax Commission are found to be correct. David A. Oates, long-term commissioner, yesterday afternoon, in the presence of two other commissioners, stated that he believed the valuation of all property in the state has been increased between $45,000,000 and $50,000,000 over the total assessment of last year.

50 YEARS AGO Dec. 28, 1959

A few years like 1959 would solve all the financial problems of the Arkansas farmer. Viewed from any angle, 1959 was a banner year on the farm. Production and per acre yield were up for almost all crops and cash receipts reached a state record of $535 million. The bumper harvest more than offset declining prices for some products.

25 YEARS AGO Dec. 28, 1984

WASHINGTON - Arkansas Power & Light Co. has joined a number of officials in opposing a request for an investigation into possible fraud or misrepresentations concerning the Grand Gulf nuclear plant. In a brief filed Wednesday with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, AP&L included a transcript from a 1977 hearing before the Arkansas Public Service Commission which the utility said proved an official had never said AP&L had been “shaking the bushes” to find capital for the plant.

10 YEARS AGO Dec. 28, 1999

War Memorial Stadium backers unveiled a plan Monday to finance a $44 million stadium expansion, including a $24 million bond issue contingent upon the stadium keeping three University of Arkansas Razorback football games each season. The expansion would increase the number of seats in War Memorial Stadium from 53,000 to 64,000, including 8,700 more general admission seats, 2,000 club seats and 30 private suites, also known as sky boxes.
