T O P 2 5 Jayhawks hang on, reach 10-0

— Marcus Morris had a career-high 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Sherron Collins scored 19 to help No. 1 Kansas hold on for a grinding 75-64 victory over Michigan on Saturday.

Kansas (10-0) wasn’t always crisp in winning its 48th consecutive home game, using a big first-half run to take the lead and hanging on from there. Xavier Henry had 15 points and the Jayhawks held Michigan to 5-for-28 shooting from three-point range to overcome 14 turnovers and numerous breakdowns in defensive rebounding.

Collins was 7 of 10 from the floor after a 1-for-12 game against La Salle.

Michigan (5-5) was again hurt by sporadic defense, playing well for stretches, breaking down completely on others in losing to Kansas for the first time.

Ranked 219th in field goal percentage defense, the Wolverines neutralized Kansas center Cole Aldrich, holding him to five points and no field goals, but allowed the Jayhawks to shoot 52 percent from the floor. Michigan stayed within reach by grabbing 14 offensive rebounds, but couldn’t pull closer than nine points after Kansas’ first-half run.

DeShawn Sims had 19 points and Manny Harris 16for the Wolverines, 1-21 alltime against No. 1 teams.

NO. 4 PURDUE 69, BALL STATE 49

INDIANAPOLIS - Robbie Hummel had 19 points and nine rebounds, and the Boilermakers won their 10th consecutive to start a season for only the second time since the 1936-1937 season.

JaJuan Johnson scored 16 points and E’Twaun Moore added 12 for the Boilermakers.

Jarrod Jones had 16 points and eight rebounds, Terrence Watson scored 12 points and Jauwan Scaife added 10 for Ball State (3-5).

NO. 5 SYRACUSE 85, ST. BONAVENTURE 72

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Rick Jackson scored 18 points, Wes Johnson and Kris Joseph added 17 each, and No. 5 Syracuse (11-0) pulled away in the second half.

Andrew Nicholson and Chris Matthews kept it close for the Bonnies, who trailed 39-35 at halftime. Matthews hit 3 three-pointers and Nicholson scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half before being ejected with 8:29 left in the game for committing a flagrant foul on Andy Rautins.

Matthews finished with 17 points, while Jonathan Hall added 10 for the Bonnies (6-4).

NO 6. WEST VIRGINIA 80, CLEVELAND STATE 78

CLEVELAND - Da’Sean Butler scored 18 points, and his layup with 1.2 seconds left helped the Mountaineers hold on after the pesky Vikings rallied from 17 points down.

Kevin Jones scored a career-high 23 points for West Virginia (8-0).

Norris Cole scored 29 and Montgomery 13 for Cleveland State (4-8).

NO. 7 DUKE 76, NO. 15 GONZAGA 41

NEW YORK - Nolan Smith scored 24 points, Jon Scheyer added 20 and the Blue Devils held Gonzaga to its lowestpoint total in 25 years in the Aeropostale Classic.

Duke (9-1) missed 12 of its first 15 shots from the field and it was only that the Bulldogs (8-3) were struggling as well that the game was close for the first 15 minutes.

Smith then hit two three-pointers and Scheyer added another in a 9-1 run to open the second half.

NO. 8 VILLANOVA 96, FORDHAM 58

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Reggie Redding returned from a suspension to score 15 points and add nine rebounds in his first game of the season for the Wildcats.

Corey Fisher, a foul-plagued Scottie Reynolds and Antonio Pena had 17 points apiece for Villanova (10-1).

Freshman Chris Gaston had 12 points to lead Fordham (2-7).

OLD DOMINION 61, NO. 11 GEORGETOWN 57

WASHINGTON - Old Dominion spoiled Georgetown’s annual game at McDonough Arena again, capitalizing on 18 turnovers and handing the No. 11 Hoyas their first loss of the season.

Ben Finney had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 4 steals for the Monarchs (7-4).

The game was played despite a record December snowstorm that brought the nation’s capital to a virtual standstill, and the Hoyas (8-1) looked as cold as the outside temperature when they tallied nine turnovers and only nine points in the first 13 minutes.

NO. 12 MICHIGAN ST. 80, IPFW 58

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Raymar Morgan and Delvon Roe scored 14 points apiece, Kalin Lucas added 10 and the Spartans tuned up for Tuesday’s visit to No. 2 Texas with a victory over Indiana-Purdue-Fort Wayne.

Michigan State (9-2) led 42-37 at halftime, but held IPFW to 23 points after the break.

Deilvez Yearby scored 25 points, including 17 in the first half, and had 15 rebounds for the Mastodons (3-6).

WICHITA STATE 85, NO. 16 TEXAS TECH 83

WICHITA, Kan. - Clevin Hannah scored 24 points to spark Wichita State past No. 16 Texas Tech, giving the Red Raiders their first loss of the season.

J.T. Durley scored 14 of his careerhigh 20 points in the first half for the Shockers (10-1), who trailed for less than 90 seconds of the game’s final 27 minutes.

John Roberson scored 24 points to lead Texas Tech (9-1).

NO. 18 OHIO ST. 60, DELAWARE ST. 44

COLUMBUS, Ohio - William Buford had 18 points, David Lighty added 12 and the Buckeyes shot 60 percent from the field in a slow-paced win over the Hornets.

It was the lowest output of the season for Ohio State (9-2), which came into the game 10th nationally in scoring (84.7 points per game).

Frisco Sandidge had 13 points for Delaware State (4-5), which lost its fourth in a row.

NO. 19 NEW MEXICO 66, CREIGHTON 61

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Darington Hobson had 22 points and 16 rebounds, and No. 19 New Mexico rallied from its biggest deficit of the season to beat Creighton.

The Blue Jays jumped to a 31-15 lead and shot 71.4 percent from the field in the first half, taking a 40-28 lead into halftime. But the Lobos (12-0) opened the second half with a 17-4 run, taking their first lead at 45-44 on Hobson’s putback with 11:47 left.

The teams traded the lead until Hobson’s layup broke a 57-57 tie. Dairese Gary helped seal the victory with two steals in the final minute.

P’Allen Stinnett led the Bluejays (4-6) with 14 points.

NO. 21 BUTLER 69, XAVIER 68

INDIANAPOLIS - Gordon Hayward put in a layup with 1.2 seconds left, and the basket was upheld after officials reviewed the play and decided aninadvertent stoppage did not take off more time than was left on the clock.

Throngs of Xavier fans who made the roughly two-hour drive from Cincinnati to Indianapolis were dismayed. Some raised their hands in disbelief, while others booed loudly.

Hayward had 22 points and 14 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (8-3), who ended a seven-game home losing streak to the Musketeers, which dated to 1989. Shelvin Mack finished with 14 points.

Xavier (6-4) was led by former Indiana Hoosier Jordan Crawford, who scored 20 points.

NO. 23 TEXAS A&M 71, THE CITADEL 50

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - Donald Sloan scored 17 points and No. 23 Texas A&M got an easy victory.

The Citadel (6-6) was led by Cameron Wells with 28 points.

NO. 25 CINCINNATI 80, LIPSCOMB 52

CINCINNATI - Lance Stephenson scored 19 points and led a first-half run that allowed the Bearcats to avoid their third consecutive loss.
