Jordan Karleskint (from right) and Stephen Thorn of Fort Smith, both members of the 501st Legion Star Wars costuming group, salute the American flag with other participants, Saturday, Sept. 24, 2022, at the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2022 Walk to End Alzheimer’s - Arkansas River Valley event on the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith campus in Fort Smith. The annual fundraiser is one of five walks this fall taking place across the state and one of 600 across the country. Carly Dethlefs, walk director for the Alzheimer’s Association, said donors in the River Valley exceeded this year’s goal of $70,000, the money from which will go towards research and support in fighting the disease which causes dementia in an estimated 6 million Americans, including 60,000 in Arkansas.
