Joseph Selzer, age 99, died October 29, 2020, after a brief illness in Fayetteville, Ark. Joe was born June 30, 1921, in West Palm Beach, Fla., the son of August Jacob Selzer, and Mary Anna Ruth Boone Selzer. After high school, Joe graduated from Palm Beach Junior College, and then worked in his father's electrical contracting business. In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, where he served for four years, including active duty in the Atlantic and South Pacific aboard Attack Transports. Based on an aptitude test given by the Navy, he returned from the fleet to participate in the Navy's Officer Training Program at Tulane University and Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. After being released from active duty in the U.S. Navy, Joe worked as a Certified Public Accountant in North Carolina, including thirty years as Controller and Treasurer with Concrete Supply Co. and Concrete Materials, Inc., in Charlotte, N.C. Joe moved to Fayetteville, Ark., in 2007, to be near his daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Robert Irwin. He married Dorothy Thomas in 2008. Joe enjoyed sports, being in nature, gardening, listening to music, and learning about other cultures. He was a devout Catholic and lived his life based on Christian principles. He transmitted his vigor for life to his six children, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. His love has been thoroughly felt and will continue through all who have known him. A virtual Memorial Mass will be celebrated through St. Joseph Catholic Church, on Facebook Live, Thursday, November 5, 1:30 p.m., CST. A private graveside service will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Fayetteville. Joe is survived by his wife, Dorothy Thomas Selzer; sister, Mary Ann Selzer Sanford of Richmond, Va; daughters Barbara J. Selzer of Athens, Ga., Catherine Selzer Irwin (Robert) of Fayetteville, Ark., Therese Fitzgerald (Arnie Kotler) of Kihei, Hawaii, Mary Beth Selzer (Craig Findly) of Athens, Ga., Ruth Selzer Brady (Steve) of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and son, Gregory J. Selzer (Lisa) of Raleigh, N.C; stepsons, Frank Sullivan (Debbie) of Milford, Ohio, John Sullivan (Jane) of Raleigh, N.C., and Harold Burch (Carolyn) of West Fork, Ark; stepdaughters, Catherine Merritt of Portland, Ore., and Vickie Almond (Myron) of Pensacola, Fla; and brother-in-law, Jim Griffith of Sarasota, Fla. Joe was predeceased by his parents, brother, Thomas L. Selzer, and sister, Emma Selzer Coira; his first wife, Elizabeth Fitzgerald Selzer; and his second wife, Genevieve Griffith Selzer.
