James H. "Hank" Garrett, age 95, a resident of Prairie Grove, Ark., passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, March 13, 2020. He was born June 25, 1924 in Erbie, Ark., the son of Alec and Cora (Hickman) Garrett. He is survived by his wife of 77 years, Pauline, their children Danny Garrett of Little Rock, Ark., and Suzanne Osterbur and her husband Stan of Edwardsville, Ill., and one grandson Michael. He was preceded in death by three sisters Anis Clayton, Nova Brewer, and Dovie Ruester and three brothers Dencie, J.A. and Nolan Garrett. Hank served two and a half years in the United States Navy during WWII aboard the USS North Carolina in the South Pacific and fought in battles from the Gilbert Islands to Tokyo, Japan. When discharged in November of 1945, he was awarded nine silver stars and one bronze star. In 1947 he began employment for Fred Koch who was building a refinery in Hartfort, Ill. Hank retired after 40 years. He taught Sunday School at the First Baptist Church in Rosewood Heights, Ill., for 15 years. After retiring, he and Pauline moved to the farm in Viney Grove, Ark. The family would like to acknowledge the care he received from Washington Regional Hospice in Fayetteville, Ark. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, March 16th, 2020, at Luginbuel Chapel in Prairie Grove, Ark., with visitation from 1-2 prior to the funeral.
