Velma Ellen Porter

Velma Ellen Maggard Porter, aged 93, died September 26, 2018. She was born April 2, 1925, to Andy and Ollie Pruitt Maggard, and was the 4th of 11 children. She was 16 years old when the United States entered World War II, and married a soldier who returned from that war in 1945. They had five children; Janis, Glenda, David, Sam, and Ed; and lived in Springdale most of their married life. Velma loved jigsaw puzzles, crunchy Cheetos, and her family; not necessarily in that order. She was predeceased by her parents, four sisters, four brothers, her husband, and one son, David Porter. Velma is survived by two sons and a daughter-in-law, Samuel Porter of Springdale, and Edward and Rhonda Porter of Springdale; two daughters and a son-in-law, Janis Porter Griggs of Springdale, and Glenda and Brad Porter Neidecker of Houston, Texas; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Jessie Allred of Springdale, and Wanda and Jerry Easley of Gravette; one brother and sister-in-law, Dale and Donna Maggard of Venus; eleven grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, September 28, 2018, at Brashears Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 29, 2018, in the chapel with Loren Collins officiating. Pallbearers will be Kent Myers, Rick Smith, Steve Everett, Greg Birchfield, Will Porter, and Sam Bowman. She will be interred in Venus Cemetery beside her beloved husband, Layton, in the community where they first met over eight decades ago. Services are entrusted to Brashears Funeral Home and Crematory of Huntsville.
