Mollie Ann McKinney Mayes

Mollie Ann McKinney Mayes was born September 28, 1936 to Harold Douglas & Jessie Irene McKinney in Big Spring, Texas. As a child, the family moved around through Texas & New Mexico. She graduated from Tucumcari High School in Tucumcari, N.M., in 1954. Mollie Graduated from Eastern New Mexico University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Arts in Education. While visiting her parents in Northwest Arkansas she met Donald Mayes. They married 3 weeks later, August 10, 1963. They moved to Denver, Colo., where Mollie had a teaching job before moving back to NWA 6 months later. Upon their return to Northwest Arkansas they had 3 girls over the next 3 years. Mollie enjoyed traveling with Donald and was game for just about any adventure he wanted to go on. The one adventure that she was able to choose was to go Sapphire Mining in Montana. In their travels Crater of Diamond state park was a popular place for them to visit. While Donald dug for diamonds, Mollie enjoyed visiting with people in the visitor center and in the museum. They were members of the Tired Iron of the Ozarks club in Gentry. Mollie taught school for over 30 years including 28 years for Springdale Schools at Lee Elementary. Many of her students still comment about how much they enjoyed her as a teacher. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Sorority since 1962. She was a long-time member of Cross Church of Springdale. She taught children's Sunday school, worked in Vacation Bible School, and sang in the choir. Mollie is preceded in death by her parents, Harold Douglas McKinney and Jessie Irene McKinney and her husband, Donald Eugene Mayes. She is survived by 3 daughters: DeAnne McGaugh and husband Alex of Goshen, Dawn Barnes and husband Michael of Springdale and Delores Breeding and husband Brant of Springdale; 9 grandchildren: Michelle Barnes of Tulsa, Kristie McGaugh Stewart and husband Bobby of Goshen, Donald Barnes of Springdale, Stephanie McGaugh of Goshen, Aaron Breeding of Jonesboro, Dillon Barnes of Springdale, Andrew Breeding, Rachel Breeding, and Daniel Breeding all of Springdale; and 3 great-grandchildren: Gabriel Stewart, Drake Stewart, and Ember Stewart of Goshen. Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel with Charlie Foster officiating. Burial will follow in Fayetteville National Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 to 10am at the funeral home on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to Circle of LIfe Hospice, 901 Jones Road, Springdale, Arkansas 72762.
