William Carl Martin

William Carl Martin, 84, passed away in hospice in Springdale, Ark., on July 8, 2018 after a lengthy illness. Carl, as he was known, had made his home in Springdale for the past several years with his companion, Jackie Humbard. Carl was one of six children born to Arthur Arwine Martin and Nettie Bryant Martin, on Dec. 15, 1933, in Yardelle, Ark. Preceding him in death was his beloved wife, W. Christine Martin (Munday), his parents, and a brother, Jean David Martin who died in the Vietnam War. Carl served his country in the U.S. Navy as a boiler operator aboard the destroyer, the USS Braine. His education at Arkansas Tech and California State L.A. launched him into a career as a Professional Engineer specializing in mechanics, boilers, and air-quality control for power plants. He was retired from Kansas City Power and Light. He is remembered and revered by many as a problem solver, one who could fix almost anything. Four siblings survive: James Martin (Evelyn), Imogene Strain (Jim), Paul Martin (Irene), all of Harrison and Western Grove, Ark., and Arlin Martin (Gwen) of Lawson, Mo.; four children: Steve Martin (Barbara) of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; Joe Martin (Gloria) of Atlanta, Ga.; Randy Martin (Becky) of Excelsior Springs, Mo.; Susan McMahon (Ike) of Atchison, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and, six great-grandchildren. Memorial Service will be Aug. 11 at First United Methodist Church in Springdale, Ark. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Bread of Life program at the church.
