Charles Lawler Hamaker

Charles Lawler Hamaker, 83, passed away while on vacation in Oslo, Norway on 7 January 2018. His final time was spent surrounded by adoring family. Charles "Charlie" was born on October 21, 1934 in Camden, Arkansas, the only child of Charley D. Hamaker and Lucille L. Hamaker. He graduated high school in Springhill, La. where he was valedictorian and then attended Tulane University on an academic scholarship. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity where he made lifelong friendships that endured through the years with annual reunions and an associated scholarship fund as a tribute to his dedication to his friends and their university. Charlie graduated Business '56 and Law '58 and was wed on 8 October 1960 in Bastrop, Louisiana to the love of his life, Brooks Ellen Oliver. He practiced law for over 50 years in Monroe both in private practice and as the City Attorney. He was a devoted member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. After retirement, he loved to spend time at Caney Lake with his family and grandchildren who knew him as "Papa". His gentle, humorous and kind manner was a model to be admired and he will be missed by all of those who knew him. Charlie is survived by his wife; Brooksie Hamaker and children, Charles Brooks Hamaker, Monroe, La., Thomas Lawler Hamaker and his wife Gina, Fayetteville, Ark.; Powell Williams Hamaker and his wife Lisa, Mandeville, La. Charles is survived by seven grandchildren; Miles Hamaker, Graham Hamaker, Anna Hamaker, Erin Hamaker, Powell Hamaker, Reese Hamaker and Charles Lane Hamaker. Special thanks is extended to Robin Bailey Hamaker for her loving devotion to the family. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Monroe, La. on Monday, January 15, 2018 at 11 a.m with Reverend Tim Neustifter officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor from 10 a.m. until the time of the service under the direction of Kilpatrick Funeral Home of Monroe.
