Joyce Nickels Herrin, 87 of Fayetteville, Arkansas passed peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, February 21, 2018. She was born March 11, 1930 in Fletcher, Oklahoma to Edgar and Seattle Mandy (Owens) Nickels. Joyce was the last of seven siblings to have passed. She grew up in the small town of Fletcher and married another Fletcher hometown boy, James "Jim" Herrin in 1950. She is survived by her husband James ("Jim") L. Herrin, one son, Jay (April) Herrin of Harrison, Arkansas, and two daughters, Jamie Herrin and Jo Mandy (Greg) Smithers both of Denton, Texas. Her four grandchildren are Jason Herrin, Melissa (Allan) Booth-Simonsen, Rachel and Sarah Smithers.One great-grandchild is Olivia Booth-Simonsen. Joyce took pride in her work as a homemaker and working part time as a secretary and a bookkeeper. She was delighted with the addition of each grandchild and a few years ago the birth of a great-granddaughter. She even learned how to read "Facebook" on an iPad, so she could keep up to date with grandchildren and great-granddaughter. Joyce loved to host and entertain as she and Jim frequently had dinner parties at their house for their close group of Fayetteville friends. She was an avid Arkansas Razorback sports fan, no matter the sport, she was happy to support the home team. Joyce was well known for her sewing skills, which she put to good use as a member of Rural Builders. She served as their President for many years, and was instrumental in getting Son's Chapel listed as a National Historic Landmark. She was a long time Member of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville. She was always reading a book and volunteered at the Butterfield Trail Village library for several years. As requested by Joyce, the family held a small private service. Burial will be in Fletcher Oklahoma at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Son's Chapel c/o Jeannette Lois, 2700 Brookbury Crossing, Fayetteville, Ark. 72701.
