Violet Vivian Horton

Violet Vivian Horton, 98, passed away Saturday, Dec. 23, 2017 in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was born Oct. 16, 1919 in Washburn, Mo. to Edward Oscar and Mollie Ethel (Wilson) Horton. Vivian moved to Springdale, Ark. in 1930 and graduated from Springdale High School in 1936. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in Home Economics at the University of Arkansas in 1940. Upon graduation Vivian became head of the Home Economics Department at Fort Smith, Ark. Junior High and taught home economics for three years. During that time, she met William Henry (Bill) Horton, who also taught at Fort Smith Ark. Junior High School. After Bill enlisted in the Army in 1943, Vivian moved back to Springdale, Ark. and was employed as bookkeeper for Jeff D. Brown's Electric Hatchery. Vivian and Bill were married in Springdale in 1945 upon his return from WWII. Vivian became bookkeeper for the Springdale News in 1963 and worked there until retirement in 1985. Vivian was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church, a member of United Methodist Women and United Methodist Circle past chairperson in Springdale, Ark. She volunteered at Altar Arts Committee, Bread of Life Outreach, and Northwest Medical Center Auxiliary. In 2005 she moved to Spanish Cove Retirement Village in Yukon, Okla. to be near her daughter, Jennifer. Vivian was preceded in death by her husband, Bill, in 1983 and by her parents. She is survived by her daughter, Jennifer Horton Amberg, and son-in-law, Jacob Henry (Jack) Amberg IV, of Yukon, Okla. and several cousins. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the United Methodist Church or a charity of one's choice. A celebration of her life will be held at 2 p.m., Thurs., Dec. 28 at the Yanda & Son Funeral Home Chapel, Yukon, with interment to be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Dec. 29 at Bluff Cemetery, Springdale, Ark.
